Créer un vase

A commission from the Centre national des arts plastiques

From 29 April to 20 September 2026, la Cité du design will present a preview of Créer un vase (Make a vase), an exhibition by the Centre national des arts plastiques.

The result of a public commission launched in 2023 to emerging designers, the exhibition brings together twenty-one designs created by the ten selected winners. These pieces are being unveiled for the first time in an original exhibition design conceived by Emilieu Studio.

The exhibition

The vase, a canvas for experimentation

A familiar, almost unremarkable object, the vase has been part of our daily lives for centuries. Yet behind this simple form lies a vast field of experimentation for designers. The exhibition Créer un vase showcases 10 projects comprising 21 unique creations, accompanied by studies, drawings, models and working documents that reveal the research, trials, doubts and experiments that led to their design. The projects explore the vase in all its dimensions—as a functional object, a sculpture, a symbolic container or a vehicle for cultural and technical narratives—and bear witness to the diversity of contemporary approaches, at the crossroads of the decorative arts, art, craftsmanship and industry. Vernacular skills, local materials, industrial processes, digital technologies and repurposed materials come together to paint a rich and nuanced picture of contemporary creation. The exhibition design, conceived by Emilieu Studio, extends these reflections through a re-use approach: the transport crates for the works, transformed into plinths and covered with textiles, are fully integrated into the exhibition layout.

The Centre national des arts plastiques

A leading figure in contemporary art

The Centre national des arts plastiques is one of the main bodies implementing the Ministry of Culture’s policy in the field of the visual arts. As a public administrative body, its mission is to support contemporary creation, assist artists and designers, and build, enrich and disseminate a national collection. Through the national commission, the Cnap encourages research and experimentation, providing creators with the means to develop ambitious and forward-looking projects.Launched in 2023, the ‘Créer un vase’ commission follows on from the government’s major commissions in the fields of decorative arts, design and craft, with the aim of exploring new ways of thinking about and producing everyday objects.

Guest designers

The exhibition brings together sixteen designers and studios, each with very different approaches and backgrounds, reflecting the vitality and diversity of the contemporary design scene:

Born in 1991, Jacques Averna is a graduate of ENSCI – Les Ateliers and École Boulle. Based in Paris, he has been designing objects and spaces with simple functions since 2019, combining low-tech solutions, humour and sustainability. His work particularly examines the typology of the vase, a theme he explored during a residency at Cirva in Marseille.

In 2015, Lorie Bayen El-Kaïm and Lauriane Carra, both graduates of Ésad Saint-Étienne in product design, joined forces and developed their practice at the intersection of scenography, illustration and textile design. Together, they explore everyday life, visual storytelling and the ability of objects to tell stories.

Born in 1997, Enzo Bosse lives and works in Dieulefit. Having trained in ceramics in Antibes and later in Dieulefit, he has developed a practice that focuses on non-industrial, found or locally sourced materials. His pieces, often drawing on the tradition of the vessel, break free from this tradition through their modelling and a distinct narrative dimension.

In 2016, Florian Dach and Dimitri Zéphir, graduates of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris, formed the duo dach&zephir. Inspired by Édouard Glissant’s concept of the ‘tout-monde’, their projects celebrate diversity by exploring multiple biographies and stories.

Born in 1991, Grégory Granados lives in Marseille and works in Saint-Étienne. He teaches at the École supérieure d’art et design de Saint-Étienne, from which he graduated in 2018, following training in woodworking and an introduction to design in London. He designs objects inspired by a close relationship with dance and music, exploring the connection between body, space and function.

In 2022, Lauriane Heim and Johan Viladrich opened their own design studio in Montpellier. Drawing on situational analysis, material research and a focus on craftsmanship, their practice spans product design, spatial design, scenography and interior design.

Founded in 2014, Île / Mer / Froid is a duo comprising Hugo Lemaire and Boris Geoffroy, who have developed a collective sculptural practice rooted in vernacular techniques and craftsmanship. Here, their work engages in dialogue with that of the ceramist Hervé Rousseau, a potter based in La Borne, whose practice is based on the use of wild clays and firing in a traditional Japanese-inspired kiln.

Born in 1989, Jules Levasseur lives and works in Semur-en-Auxois. A graduate of the École supérieure d’arts décoratifs de Reims, he has developed a practice at the intersection of design, craftsmanship and industry, working closely with local artisans and businesses. In 2024, he founded the Métiers Vivants® brand, dedicated to promoting collaborative research.

Marie Cornil and Alexandre Willaume, who trained at ECAL and ENSCI – Les Ateliers respectively, joined forces in 2018 to develop a cross-disciplinary approach combining functional objects, visual installations and formal research. The Galerie nationale du design has also commissioned them to design furniture for its ‘La Mezzanine’ space.

Born in 1988, Octave Rimbert Rivière lives and works in Amsterdam. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, he creates functional sculptures that blend digital technology with traditional craftsmanship, exploring the relationship between humans, machines and imperfection.
