The first exhibition in the Présent >< Futur cycle will run from 15 September 2023 to 7 January 2024 at the Cité du design. Scheduled as part of the programme of France Design Week 2023, vrai ou FAUVE puts Laureline Galliot's colourful work under the spotlight. With her innovative approach to the practice of design, she explores the new pictorial forms offered by digital techniques. Her iPad is her palette: this is a designer-painter who has paced the exhibition rooms of museums to experiment with the potential this tool offers and transpose the gestural aspects of artists' work into a digital language. Later, she worked to master virtual reality software at the Disney Research Lab, until she felt able to paint in 3D.

For Laureline Galliot « colour is not a finish, but rather a material ». Like the Fauvist painters, she uses colours to single out each of her gestures, sculpting the luminous material on the screen. The designs she creates are then printed, on paper, fabric or in 3D, in an approach that amounts to digital craftsmanship.

Laureline Galliot has invented a singular formal world which questions the way we see things, conditioned as we are by the industrial standard. This exhibition of about thirty objects, projects and videos presents a comprehensive overview of ten years of practice as a designer. In addition to her iconic pieces featured in the collections of numerous museums, the exhibition reveals her modus operandi in the form of a research laboratory, as well as through a pioneering collaboration with Maison Benaud, a Lyon-based firm specialised in moiré fabrics.

About Laureline Galliot

Born in 1986, Laureline Galliot is a designer, but above all she's an ardent lover of comic books, cartoons and painting. It was dance, which she practised in a dance company from the ages of 9 to 17, that originally gave her a taste for decoration. After training in textile design at the ENSAAMA in Paris, Laureline decided to study product design. After graduating from the ENSCI-Les Ateliers in 2012, she won the Design Parade award at Villa Noailles in Hyères in 2013 and stayed at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto, Japan in 2017. She has worked with different design editors, including Nodus Rug.
Her creations feature in the CNAP's national collections and in those of several museums: the Swiss Institute New York, the Mudam in Luxembourg, the SEEDS design gallery in London, the Centre Pompidou, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, as well as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design in Bordeaux.
Laureline Galliot defines herself as a "designer-assembler".
She sees every surface as a potential medium for her visual and pictorial forms of expression. She recognises neither the boundaries between the disciplines nor their limits, in the sense that her digital painting is proliferative and toys with the idea of the decorative.
Her curiosity leads her to draw as much on Fauvism or the Vienna Secession as it does on folk arts and craft methods.
