The DNSEP Design Graphics and Images course includes formal and conceptual teaching ranging across all the practices of graphic design (publishing, signs, typefaces, etc.) and those relating to the production of images (drawn or photographic images, static or moving, etc.). It is organised into three components: Publishing, Images and Identities.

The acceleration of dissemination techniques and the visible dematerialisation of the world are obliging us to regularly re-examine the traditional forms of transmission of visual messages and their functions. Graphics as the practice of "inscriptions", giving form to writings and the image as a tool of perception or narration of worlds are both part, in different ways, of the language and communication systems space.

If creating images, producing graphics is today about manipulating signs and forms and organising them to ensure communication, then it is also necessarily about questioning the economy of these practices from production to dissemination, from transmission to reception and also the historical, technical, scientific and political contexts in which these visual forms appear (from the individual to the industrial and vice versa).

Understanding what is inherently at stake in these anthropologically fundamental visual disciplines and how the codes work (from writing to reading, from signage to semiology, from the real to the imaginary) is a necessity if we are to draw the lines of their possible uses, thereby opening up jobs for contemporary creatives and designers in the fields of communication and information design.

Coordinator (Years 4 and 5): Jean-Claude PAILLASSON is a graphic designer and director working mainly in the theatre. He has been teaching graphic design since 1991. He is in charge of the IRD laboratory.
